Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church is prayerfully seeking the man whom God has chosen to serve as our next Pastor.  He shall be a full-time/bi-vocational Pastor, licensed and ordained in the Baptist faith.

Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church, located in Windsor, NC, is an African American Congregation established in 1876 and affiliated with the West Roanoke Missionary Baptist Association and the General Baptist State Convention of North Carolina, Inc.

The church has a qualified leadership team consisting of Deacons and Trustees, as well as ministries and auxiliaries.  Along with the Music Ministry, there is an active Youth and a Young Adult Ministry, Health and Wellness, Sunday School and Bible Study. The Jethro Pugh Scholarship Endowment and the Indian Woods Scholarship Fund has led to well over 100 students benefitting from a legacy of advancing education.

The Indian Woods Community and Bertie County has a rich and noteworthy history.  The community itself goes back to the original Tuscarora Tribe (1722) and other Native American tribes before the migration to place like New York as noted in the book, "Bertie County - An Eastern Carolina History " written by our own community professor of history (North Carolina Central University, NC A&T State University, and the University of Memphis) Dr. Arwin D. Smallwood.

Bertie County Courthouse, Bertie Memorial Hospital, Elmwood, Freeman Hotel, Hope Plantation, Jordan House, King House, Liberty Hall, Rosefield, and Windsor Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The population of the town of Windsor as of the 2020 census is 3,582 with approximately 60% African American. The town has a hospital with helicopter transport, two nursing facilities, banks, new state of the arts library, a new housing complex, one county-wide high school, a STEM school and an Early College, YMCA, a senior center, parks and recreational facilities, fast food chains, restaurant. Bertie County is known for its rich farmlands including peanuts, cotton, and tobacco. Employment opportunities throughout the county mainly consist of the peanut industry, the operations of Perdue Farms, the timber industry, along with county government and Bertie County Schools. There are many nonprofit organizations that offer opportunities for community involvement.  Overall, there is room for growth in all areas of Bertie County, but we see a legacy of sustainabililty and continued hope.

The Indian Woods community itself is vastly becoming a mixed community of retirees, but still a number of families working and raising young children.  There are many notable people from Indian Woods Church and community who were raised and educated in Bertie County who went on to do great things in sports, medicine, law, politics, and other areas of advancement, which is credited to the background and foundation from this community.

HISTORY OF INDIAN WOODS MISSIONARY BAPTIST CHURCH

On January 1, 1877, the young congregation purchased the Indian Woods Chapel and a small parcel of land on which the building stood and established itself as the Indian Woods Baptist Church.  Rev. Mebane continued to serve until a new minister was called to pastor the church.....from that time Rev. Thaddeus Wilson and Rev. J.J. Thompson served.  From the Gospel Oak to the first Indian Woods church building and the purchase of additional land where the first building program leading to the construction of an eloquent wood frame building with a gallery and a potbelly stove.  In 1949, Rev. John White accepted the call on an interim basis and proceeded to lobby for Rev. Charles Melvin Creecy as the full-time pastor.  Under Rev. Creecy's pastorate, an incredible story of progress began to unfold.  Soon it became evident that a larger sanctuary was needed and in 1955, the groundbreaking for the new building began.  The congregation set out with a pay as you go plan for funding the building.  although progress on the church was slow, Rev. Creecy kept the belief of the people high.  In December 1961, the members met for the last time in the old structure and marched into the new edifice. Unto this day, Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church remains, "A Community of Christian Disciples Worshipping and Learning."   The Indian Woods Missionary Baptist Church is a church committed to Christ to make a difference in the lives of those in the church, family, and community.

Bertie County is one of the largest counties in North Carolina, spanning 741 square miles.  It was originally part of Albemarle County, established in 1660.  In 1670, Chowan County, including Bertie Precinct, was cut from Albemarle County.  Bertie Precinct was finally given status of county in 1722 when it separated from Chowan County.  Initially, Bertie County was comprised of present Bertie County, Tyrrell County, Edgecombe County, Northampton County, and Hertford County.  By 1780, Bertie County had been divided to resemble its current shape.

Bertie County was named for James and Henry Bertie, who purchased land from the original Lord Proprietors.  Bertie County's county seat is Windsor, which was established in 1766 and was make county seat in 1774.  The County includes the eight incorporated townships of Askewville, Aulander, Colerain, Kelford, Lewiston-Woodville, Powellsville, Roxobel, and Windsor.

Bertie County is comprised of fertile uplands and lowlands, with some large swamps called pocosins, making Bertie County ideal for agriculture.  In addition, the timber industry is key to the area.  Livestock and the growing poultry industry, which focuses on broiler production, are major contributors to Bertie County's agriculture base.
